Jane looks at herself in the mirror before leaving to join her mother, who is outside honking the car horn. The view then switches to Jane, who is researching breast augmentation surgery on the Internet. Lester is watching from the window as his wife talks to one of the Jims about her roses. He describes the gay couple who live next door: Jim Olmeyer and Jim Berkley. Lester Burnham continues to narrate as the camera switches views. The camera pans out to show Carolyn Burnham snipping roses from her garden with pruning shears that match her gardening clogs. The next shot is a close-up of a beautiful red rose. An irritating alarm rings, and Lester, still in voice-over, ruminates on his sense that "in a way, I'm dead already." The voice-over continues as the camera follows Lester Burnham into the shower, where he masturbates - the "high point" of his day. As we fly over suburban America, Lester Burnham begins to speak, introducing himself to the audience and informing them, "in less than a year, I'll be dead." The shot then transitions into Lester Burnham's bedroom, where he is sleeping alone. Would you?" The opening credits roll, and the shot switches to an aerial view of a neighborhood. An unseen boy (presumably the camera operator) asks her if she wants him to kill her father, to which she replies, "yeah. Highlight Of The Day has played a key role in my advances and I hope it helps you in the same way. I’ve pushed through a lot of ‘limitations’ in the last few months and it has given me the happiness and confidence to take on bigger and bolder challenges. But right now, pushing myself to do the things I truly want to do, but find scary, is what brings me most happiness. Sometimes what we think makes us happy, isn’t what makes us happy at all. So I recommend a good time to write about the highlight of your day is straight after you brush your teeth at night, and if you don’t brush your teeth at night…you should. The best way to create a habit is to piggyback on an existing habit. I was surprised and I bet you will be too. See what you discover about yourself and what really makes you happy. I’m going to do the same thing I did with the students and challenge you to try this for the next 30 days. These are just a few of the many positives that this simple practice has brought to my life. It steers me to be grateful for all that is good in the world and sets me up for a peaceful nights rest. Writing the highlight of my day is the last thing I do before I go to sleep. I procrastinate less, I’d hate to have to write that sitting on my butt was the highlight of my day, maybe when I’m 90, but not now. I’m fairly competitive and am always trying to out do yesterday’s highlight. I’m more present in each moment of the day and automatically try and get more out of it. If you are seeking out the good, you tend not to notice the bad. I consciously and unconsciously scan the world in anticipation that something great is about to happen. It directs my focus towards the positive things in my life. Sometimes something brilliant happens in the morning and I think to myself that if something tops this for ‘highlight of the day’, then this day will have been an awesome day indeed - and I’m in a great mood all day. This information has made it very simple for me to identify what really makes me happy, and then shape my days in a way that sees me doing a lot more of it. I have been able to look back over several months of daily highlights and see repetition and obvious patterns begin to emerge. I describe this simple practice as being a keystone habit because it not only answers the student’s question, but it also had numerous other positive effects on my life. I was pretty happy with that to leave it at that, but the students demanded a bit more, so I shared with them something that has really helped me recently.įor the past 3/4 months, I have taken a few minutes each night to reflex on my day and write just 3 or 4 lines about the highlight of my day. My answer was a fairly obvious one – “Figure out what makes you happy and do more of it”. The question was – “How do I figure out what to do with my life? My answer seemed to resonate with them so I thought I’d share it here too. I was recently asked a question that often pops up when I'm speaking to teenagers.
